Facebook Connect (Speed By Design)

by Siu Lun on Mar.26, 2010, under Flash, Programming, Web

I’ve been looking into building a sample Facebook Connect app recently for experimentation and showcase use.

One thing I encountered in recent projects is the seemingly slow speed of profile images loaded via Flash.

The one thing that I’ve found that is a potential ‘bottleneck’ to this problem is the way Facebook Connect is used on the site.

Essentially the fundamental difference from our recent projects is that we used PHP client side library which proxies all information into the server before being served to client side. Facebook provides a javascript based implementation as well.

Based on the above information you can basically tell that proxying is a speed bottleneck and an inefficient way to present what’s essentially the user’s information to the user only. Javascript solves the issue as it is a request from the client’s browser to Facebook directly.

Based on this theory, it should be obvious that php client library should only be used if the server has to manipulate, store or doing any information processing before the information is presented to the end user. Javascript library should be used whenever information should be presented to the end user first.

I’m in the middle of proving this theory. Will update once result is known.

Beware of the scammers. Beware of those who cannot develop and claims they can advise on websites or SEO.

by Siu Lun on Mar.25, 2010, under Business, Ramblings, Web

Those who claim to have digital experience in Hong Kong, most of them can’t build them themselves, and actually live off nothing. They’re like those so called ‘consultants’. i.e. bunch of scammers living off the ignorance of the public.

Be informed, now plebs, that consultants and people who generally cannot build the system they advise on are nothing more than a little bit more informed plebians.

I don’t know what it is about Hong Kong people, maybe actually it is more of a trait of chinese people in general, but the majority (not all). The majority of people in Hong Kong loves to bullshit, they bullshit on things they don’t know and they’re so obviously bullshiting.

This is a lesson well learnt, look at someone twice, ask them to prove their worth before you ever hire them.

I’m going back to my workshop, build something awesome. Later.

Hidden talents of Hong Kong

by Siu Lun on Mar.15, 2010, under Computer, Web

I’ve had the privilege of socialising, and working with some of the more passionate web enthusiast in Hong Kong for the past few months. As being a producer, I’ve had to source vendors whom can deliver exceptionally high quality web productions to match the need of our clients.

In my search for such talents, I’ve come across a lot of individuals whom I would never have found unless I found somebody who knows of them.

Such talents obviously found that it is much more lucrative, and satisfying to work for oneself in a city where web development is poorly understood, appreciated and paid.

The talent is out there, it’s a matter of either they get together to form a bigger group, or, somebody with the money and willingness to snatch them all up. Can you depend on any existing companies in Hong Kong? I doubt it very much, one thing I’ve noticed is that in a 4As environment, you can only get in if you either worked for another 4As before, or a recommendation from a friend.

It’s really quite an ‘inbred’, closed-off group particularly when people in Hong Kong looks out for friend and family even when they have no real talent. No offence intended to those that do.
