N.Korea incident, world’s response. Unanswered questions.

by Siu Lun on May.25, 2010, under Life, Politics, Ramblings

Just a post on life lately. Something got me ticked off today as the stock market plunged (I’m not in it so *phew*), and news reports and attributing part of the blame on N.Korean tension.

if N.Korea really sank S.K ship. Why would they react angrily for the accusations and said it would send a team of their own guys to investigate, fear of sanctions? But if it was done by a rouge agent, they can easily admit to it and dismiss the whole thing as an accident. Or is there more sinister forces in play. Somebody’s stole N.Korean torpedos and fired it off a private sub? There are questions, and we should seek answers before jumping to conclusions.

What has N.Korea got to gain by sinking one ship, if they’re not going for an all-out-war?

For all I can see, I’d say a rouge spy has infiltrated the ranks of N.Korean army and did that on purpose to ignite a war.

Wouldn’t surprise me if it was US top secret material, or maybe even more sinister than that. Maybe part of the plans of the ‘elite’ families of the world. Who knows, but I think right now, it’s uncalled for. South Korean broadcasting propaganda over the border and stopping trade would only provoke N.Korea.

Common misconceptions of Hong Kong being hard-workers and Europeans and US lazy.

by Siu Lun on May.06, 2010, under Life, Ramblings

Even the Chief Executive of BP won’t say when oil leaks can be stopped.

Don’t ask devs for when all the bugs can be fixed. It’s not about Hong Kongers being hard working and Europeans not, it’s just being responsible by telling the truth. Developers might be able to tell you once he found the bug, like BP will probably be able to tell you when they find the exact leak, but even then, it’s an estimate. Not a ‘deadline’ to fix bugs by.

Hong Konger’s being hard-working is really a load of rubbish, if that’s true, Hong Kong people would’ve overtaken the world – but Hong Kong haven’t – Hong Kong haven’t even got past Singapore. Don’t pet yourselves in the back just because you can stay up till 2am – sometimes working!

It’s just that in the UK and US, they’re all so much smarter in the way they work than Hong Kong people they don’t need to work OT every day! I’m sorry to say this in front of my Hong Kong friends but, I’ve worked in both worlds and I’m not being biased.

There is no doubt that Hong Kong people are more willing to work OT, however.

Again, get real. There’s a world of difference out there to catch up, and people need to realise it. I get told about this misconception all the time. The only reason why European/US developers takes more time on a project than in Hong Kong is because they’re coding it RIGHT!

Oh and did I mention in US/UK people start work at 8:30am!? Hong Kong apparently don’t need to start till 11 am! So when US/UK people work OT, it’s more than the OT time of HK people.

Later.

web development, pushing the boundaries in Hong Kong

by Siu Lun on Mar.04, 2010, under Business, Ramblings, Web

In my current role, I’m trying to do what seems like an impossible task. Changing the web development landscape in Hong Kong.

Being in a large multi-national company in Hong Kong, I’ve been empowered to help develop a world-class interactive agency. This means I have the projects that can show the world, all I need is to find and gather the right people, work with the right people, train the right people and overall raise the bar of web development in Hong Kong to a whole new level.

This might sound big, and well, to be frank, I do believe it is. In my environment now, it helps being around similarly ambitious people. The hard part of course, is to educate such people without being patronising, and it’s a lot about working with people while being courteous. I find it very challenging, especially with working with over 200 individual minds with their own quirks and traits.

Nevertheless, we try every step to push the limits, we’re pushing the limits in every level. It is a challenging road for all involved, but everytime we emerge with a project that’s better than the last. There comes a limit though that we’ll touch one day on the level of skills, and overall enthusiasm. I’m trying to find the right people, convert what we have. It’s a little like a missionary on a mission to convert the populace.

It’s a hard road, I’m learning as I’m going along, while bringing everybody else up to speed, but success will eventually come.
